We have all seen it in movies and read it in romantic books. That moment when one person’s glimmering eyes meet another. For a few moments, time stands still. Everything else blurs and it is suddenly only the two of them in existence together. That moment when someone finds their soulmate through their first connection. Love at first sight. While this is a beautiful moment in writing and film, can it be real? I believe it is, and here’s why.
I have always been a sucker for romance. I grew up watching romantic movies and TV shows with my mom. Ever seen Maid in Manhattan? Say Yes to the Dress? The Hallmark channel? These movies showed me that anything was possible in love.
It can be difficult to keep your faith in love through the pain and heartache it can cause. Through the tears on your pillowcase and the goodbyes you never wished for or expected. On the other hand, it can be easy to say that love is overrated and glorified. That those picture-perfect moments in movies and books aren’t real. It can seem easier to deny yourself the journey towards love and avoid those feelings. Well, I believe that the difficult route can lead to beautiful destinations and is far worthwhile.
I believe that love at first sight does happen in reality. I believe in “when you know, you know.” Not only have I experienced love at first sight for myself, but I also believe in the science that can make it happen. I believe in the power of intuition. When you feel strong intuition in your body, you can reach conclusions above rational thought. However, intuition does not ignore rational thought either. It is subconscious, combining your emotions with your experiences.
Psychology Today defines intuition as “a process that gives us the ability to know something directly without analytic reasoning, bridging the gap between the conscious and nonconscious parts of our mind, and also between instinct and reason.” Intuition is what gives us the ability to experience love at first sight. To think without thinking. Our instincts align with what we have learned to gravitate towards from our experiences. When someone experiences love at first sight, they feel something that they have not felt with another person before. It is an energetic connection that just feels right.
This is not to say that anytime you feel a connection with someone, they are your soulmate! Love can come around in tricky and confusing ways. It is certainly not always easy to determine what is right. But, with every failed attempt, your intuition will grow. It will learn when to create a sense of hesitancy and when to lift the walls and let another person in.
I believe in love at first sight, and I believe that it can happen when it is least expected. Maybe I am a hopeless romantic, but isn’t it exciting to believe in something? To believe in love? To keep that energy alive inside of you? I recognize that falling in love isn’t for everyone and that it can happen in many different ways. However, I certainly wouldn’t rule out the power of love at first sight.
